The Cistern Country Store is taking registrations for the 55th Annual Adult Big Buck Contest and the 3rd Annual Youth Buck Contest. The registration fee is $20 cash per hunter. Registrations are accepted between noon and 8:00 p.m. daily at the Cistern Country Store located on Hwy. 95 between Smithville and Flatonia at FM 2237.

These contests are for low fence hunting during the general season in Fayette and bordering counties. Field dressed bucks must be brought to the store for official measurements.

Adult cash prizes will be awarded for three categories: heaviest, most points, and the widest inside spread. The adult season runs November 7, 2020 - January 3, 2021. Deadline to register for the adult contest is November 6th at the annual deer hunters’ stew, which is served at 8:00 p.m. at the store location. Outside tables will be set up for social distancing this year.

The youth contest is for ages 16 and under. Cash prizes will be determined by totaling the most points + inside spread + length of the longest tine on each side of the main beam. The youth season is October 31-November 1 and November 7, 2020 through January 17, 2021. The deadline to register is October 30th.

Bunco Is Back!

After a long break due to recent restrictions, I’m happy to report that Bunco is back at the Cistern Store. Every first Wednesday of the month, players meet to play the funfilled game. The next session will be on November 4. New players are welcome, so if you’d like to join us, arrive at 11 a.m. to pay your $5 registration fee. You may also use this time to place an order for lunch if you choose not to bring your own. Game play begins at 11:30 a.m. and continues for 12 rounds. A lunch break is taken, and then play starts over again for another 12 rounds. The day finishes up at around 2:00 p.m. with prizes being awarded.

Flag Blessing

Every year, the St. Elizabeth #20 branch of KJZT Family Life Organization buys new flags for St. Cyril & Methodius Church in Cistern. Typically, the new flags would be given to the church around Flag Day. They would be blessed during the mass, and then mass would be followed with a trip outside to the flag pole for the flags to be raised, a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and an old fashioned ice cream social. Unfortunately, as has been the case with many events this year, the annual event had to be cancelled. However, the church was still presented with new flags this year, just at a later date. On August 2, Reverend Eddie Winkler blessed the flags, they were raised by Pat Lyons and Charles Vinklarek, and they are now flying outside the church.
